Bekkers - McLaren Vale Syrah 2021:
'Bravo' an Emmanuelle.

95+ Points - Erin Larkin (RobertParker.com):
“The 2021 Syrah is supple, dark and spicy, and gives me all the detail and presence I was hoping for from the excellent 2021 vintage. The tannins in the mouth emphasize the black fruit, and it pulls together as a seamless, cohesive whole, even at this very young/early stage in its life. This is much more open-weaved and approachable than the Clarendon Syrah tasted next to it. Perhaps this speaks more of attraction and seduction up front. The fruit is sourced from three parcels—41% Clarendon (with one parcel at 194-242 meters above seal level) and 59% Seaview (with one parcel at 102-110 meters above seal level). You can see from the elevations that the Clarendon area is hilly and elevated (and beautiful!)—this is obvious when you visit. There was around 30% whole bunches in the mix this year, and it had a wild ferment and matured in French oak puncheons (500 liters, 47% new) until bottling in December 2022. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." -Wine Advocate
98 Punkte + Top 100 + Höchst bewerteter Syrah/Shiraz des Jahres - James Halliday:
"The colour is deep and still youthful, three-plus years along its journey. The complex bouquet is so multifaceted it’s a challenge to describe. Game, Eastern spices, black cherry and liquorice move backwards and forwards across the palate and bouquet. Aboriginal dot painting stuff."

Bekkers - McLaren Vale Grenache 2021:
98 Punkte - James Halliday_The Weekend Australian:
"The red berry, cherry and a whisper of dark chocolate define the bouquet and palate of a totally delicious wine. All the flavours of the palate are those promised by the bouquet. It’s only 14% alc/vol and medium-bodied; the superb balance guarantees a wine that can be drunk tonight and all steps of the 30 years to follow." - James Halliday

96+ points - Erin Larkin (RobertParker.com):
"Here, the start of a very diverse but magnificent trip of vintages begins. 2021 was not only an excellent season in terms of benevolent weather at all the right times, healthy flowering, yields, growing season conditions and harvest, but also a reprieve from the three years preceding it that were defined by warmth, dryness and low yields. 2022 was the slightly cooler, slightly wetter pigeon pair to 2021, and it produced wines of eminent silkiness and approachability, which was followed by 2023. It was cool and wet and perhaps challenging for some, but from a wine-quality perspective on this observational side of the fence, it was superb. So here, the 2021 Grenache is everything we expect from the season: balanced, placid, powerfully structured, supple and long through the finish. It is a baby, and while many bottles of this great vintage will have already been enjoyed, it is undoubtedly one of the pedigree vintages that will continue to improve over the coming decades. This is the lowest labeled alcohol reading of any Bekkers Grenache produced yet, at 14% alcohol. Sealed under screw cap." - Wine Advocate
Bekkers is a producer for whom I have immense respect, led by husband-and-wife proprietors Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers. Toby handles the vineyards, Emmanuelle the winemaking, and the combination of their vast knowledge and experience is inherent in the wines tasted here for this report. With regard to viticulture, and especially Grenache although not limited to it, Toby is a trusted source of information when I seek to further understand a particular process or function of a vineyard or clone. The wines themselves predictably felt as thoughtful and as detailed as the people who made them, and the vertical here at the estate in McLaren Vale was as insightful as it was enjoyable. This producer comes warmly and roundly recommended.
95 Punkte - James Suckling:
"A producer firmly entrenched within the regional pantheon, if not playing a very different card to the transparent, red-fruited pinot-like zeitgeist. Blewitt Springs, Kangarilla and Onkaparinga sourcing services sand, ironstone and silty geologies and a shift in ripening windows. The texture is broad with warm and sunny terracotta aromas. Blood plum, clove, tamarind and souk-like exotica buffer the textural mid-palate. The finish, long and penetrating. Despite the open-knit attack, there is ample compression at the finish, suggesting further space to unfurl in the cellar. Excellent grenache, glimpsing greats of the southern Rhone. Drink or hold." Aug 2023, Ned Goodwin MW
96 Punkte - Wine Pilot:
"Signature McLaren Vale, the wine is singing before you begin to lift the glass to your face. Crimson rose, fresh raspberries and redcurrant are upfront followed by blackberry, Damson plum skin and Adzuki bean. What follows is an arrangement of parts that, once tasted, meld seamlessly into such a pleasurable wine drinking experience that does not require any further dissection. Fine Mithril tannins (yes it's fictional chain mail from Lord of the Rings) but it does feel other worldly. A long, very lengthy palate of nutmeg, five spice and King mushroom follow. Devine. Drink with Rabbit stew and don’t forget the poh-tate-toes." -Shanteh Wale
Bekkers - McLaren Vale Syrah Grenache 2021:
98 Punkte - James Halliday_The Weekend Australian:
"It’s the depth of colour that draws the intake of breath, and setting the pace of the wine that, through some vinous magic simultaneously offers elegance and power. Plum, blackberry and black cherry provide the fruit flavours, welded together on the lingering finish."- James Halliday

"The 2021 Syrah Grenache is concentrated, dark and almost brooding, with notes of blackberry, mulberry, licorice, resin and roast beef crust. This is spicy like aniseed, inky and dark, with clove and star anise. It is significantly darker in aspect and countenance than I expected. It's always good to remember you don't know everything—wines like this one remind me. There is sweet roasted beetroot, bloodroot, dolce paprika and black tea. You can drink this at any time, but I actually think it will be better in the future. Like so many of the 2021 reds from South Australia, this is a cellaring proposition of the highest order. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." -Wine Advocate
97 Punkte - The Vintage Journal:
"Medium deep crimson. Attractive blackberry pastille, dark plum, hint black pepper aromas with roasted chestnut, hint wax polish notes. Superbly concentrated, buoyant and complex wine with pure blackberry fruits, fine slinky textures, lovely roasted chestnut marzipan notes and well-integrated fresh acidity. Finishes chalky firm and minerally. Impressively balanced wine with lovely definition and complexity."- Andrew Caillard MW

"Why isn't there more wine like this from McLaren Vale? Great colour and style here. A fragrant wine with intense and complex aromas, pepper, blue and red fruits, meaty, blood and minerals. The medium palate weaves a wonderous course with its soft dense tannins packed equally from front to back; the mouth filling black fruits turn smoked meat savoury and filled with delicious McLaren Vale tannins to close. The richness of McLaren Vale with elegance. Each wine in this company has its own personality. Top drop." - Rob Geddes
