Bekkers - McLaren Vale Syrah 2018+2019:

'Bravo' an Emmanuelle.

99 Punkte JG 2018 - James Halliday 2021:

"Hand-picked, the vinification very gentle to avoid extraction of aggressive tannins, matured in French puncheons (58% new) on lees with minimal additions until Dec ’19. A truly great McLaren Vale syrah, as smooth as velvet, yet with layer upon layer of purple and black fruits hypnotic in their perfection. 14% alc, screwcap."

96 Points - Joe Czerwinski (RobertParker.com):

"Picked a month earlier than the 2017 yet incorporating a higher proportion of whole bunches (25%) in the ferment, the 2018 Syrah comes in a half-degree lower in alcohol (14% alcohol) than the preceding vintage. It's simultaneously more aromatic and floral on the nose and expansive on the palate than the 2017—a clear step up in quality. Hints of violets, peppery spice, black olives and blueberries mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is round, rich and mouthfilling, leading up to a long, licorice-tinged finish. It's a stunning example of McLaren Vale Syrah, blended from two parcels in Clarendon (48% of the fruit) and one in Seaview (52%), and aged in a mix of new (58%) and used 500-liter French oak puncheons." -Wine Advocate

"The colour is deep and still youthful, three-plus years along its journey. The complex bouquet is so multifaceted it’s a challenge to describe. Game, Eastern spices, black cherry and liquorice move backwards and forwards across the palate and bouquet. Aboriginal dot painting stuff."

96+ Points - Erin Larkin (RobertParker.com):

“This is the first wine we made,” says Toby Bekkers. “We built it around a style vision.” The 2019 Syrah leads with peppered deli meat, cloves, pink peppercorn, blackberry, mulberry, raspberry coulis and Szechuan peppercorn on the nose. In the mouth, the flavors are incredibly densely packed, but it is not heavy. In terms of balance and finesse, this has that in spades too. Very impressive. Elegance 101." -Wine Advocate

Bekkers - McLaren Vale Grenache 2018+2019:

Bright, clear colour; medium-bodied, exceptional balance, spicy red/purple berries, fine tannins, and a very long finish. 14.5% alc, screwcap."

"Despite coming in at 14.5% alcohol and being picked 20–30 days earlier than the 2017, the 2018 Grenache boasts darker fruit flavors and more breadth on the palate than its predecessor. It's also more floral, with roseate aromas adding an appealing grace note to the black cherries and ripe raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and rich without being heavy or overdone, with a long, elegant finish." -Wine Advocate

"The 2019 Grenache shows pomegranate, raspberry, red licorice, clove, aniseed and a hint of fennel flower alongside crushed quartz, and it is possessed of very fine, silty tannins. There are notes of framboise—strawberries—orange zest, black tea and some saffron. Mellifluous... it's excellent." -Wine Advocate

97 Punkte JG 2019 - James Halliday 2022:

"Blewitt, Seaview and Kangarilla sourcing across a meld of sand, ironstone, gravel, silt and clay. The wine that I look forward to the most here, no matter how brilliant the others are. A shimmering light ruby. A textural polyglot, incandescent, lit by its delicate shades of fruit as much as its textural precision and savouriness. Nebbiolo meets pinot on the nose. This is what grenache does at the highest calibre. Sandalwood, Darjeeling, bergamot, crushed rose, pomegranate, tamarind and kirsch. Long and gritty in the best sense. Febrile. Tensile. Would love to see it in bigger oak. A beautiful stain on the memory bank."

98 Punkte JG 2019 - The Wine Pilot:

"The Bekkers model is a little unusual for grenache in some ways rejecting the concept of single site is best and going for greater complexity by taking fruit from a variety of sub-regions. Toby and Emmanuelle use fruit from a small number of select vineyards around McLaren Vale, from Blewitt Springs and Seaview Road at around 100m in altitude up to Kangarilla at 240m. It ranges from close to the ocean on Seaview Road to 17 kilometres inland at Kangarilla. Whatever they are doing is working as this wine is a stunningly beautiful interpretation of Australian Grenache.

But it’s not a wine that immediately jumps out and bites. It creeps up on you and only slowly reveals all it has to offer. Lightish in colour it has superb fruit purity – red cherry, tobacco, cinnamon and red earth thrown in the mix with a subtle blanket of oak. The palate balance is then exceptional between ripe yet compact fruit and surprising tannin weight while remaining silky. The climax is an ethereal finish – long and fine that goes on for what seems like an eternity. It’s a new highpoint in Australian Grenache with a long life ahead."

96 Punkte JG 2019 - The Real Review:

"Medium ruby colour, bright and hints of purple in the rim. Red cherry, dusty earth and cumin on the nose. The palate follows the nose in
its savoury dominance. The fruit has ample intensity but it’s the earth and spice notes that build interest and character. It is seamless in its flow with fine tannins and soft acidity caressing it extremely long. A great example of what can be done in the Vale with grenache and time will only improve the experience"

96 Punkte JG 2019 - The Vintage Journal:

"Medium crimson. Fresh musky plum, raspberry aromas with hints of stonefruit, mocha, roasted walnut. Well-rounded and developed palate with deep set musky plum, raspberry, mocha flavours, fine loose knit chalky tannins, some roasted walnut notes and long fresh indelible acidity. Finishes chalky with pronounced acidity. Sourced from Blewitt Springs, Kangarilla and Onkaparinga Hills vineyard site."

Bekkers - McLaren Vale Syrah Grenache 2018+2019:

96 Punkte JG 2018 - James Halliday 2021:

"A 64/36% blend from multiple parcels spread across six vineyards, vinified separately, 15% whole bunch grenache, 30% whole bunch syrah, 5-16 days cold soak, wild fermentation, basket-pressed to used oak. Deeply coloured, fuller-bodied than the grenache, with black fruits, and a clearer tannin structure. 14% alc, screwcap."

"The 2018 Syrah Grenache is a terrific blend of 64% Syrah and 36% Grenache, aged entirely in used 500-liter puncheons. Almost a third of the Syrah was fermented as whole bunches, so there is a touch of steaminess apparent, but those herbal notes serve to help balance the exuberant blueberries, mulberries and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, creamy and supple on the palate, with a long, softly dusty finish, it's a lush, fruit-driven wine that should drink well for a decade or more." -Wine Advocate

95 Points - Erin Larkin (RobertParker.com):

"The Bekkers Syrah Grenache is always Shiraz-dominant and made to a 70/30 or 60/40 margin. The flex, or variation in vintage expressions, comes from the flavor density shift from vintage to vintage. This 2019 Syrah Grenache is concentrated and supple, with layers of cassis, blackberry, raspberry coulis, pink peppercorn and a scrape of olive tapenade; it is balanced and mid-weight—almost leafy, with tobacco leaf and saltbush through the finish. It's a harmonious, zen wine." -Wine Advocate

95 Punkte JG 2019 - James Suckling:

"Impressively rich fruit here, this has complexity already, with florals, spices, red fruit and darker berries on the nose. The palate is fitted snugly with long, fine tannins and a discreetly spicy thread of oak spice and structure. Succulent and sweetly fruited. Drink over the next ten years. Screw cap."

95 Punkte JG 2019 - The Real Review:

"Intense and deep purple core, brightening into the rim. Cardamom, plums and boudin noir on the nose. Medium to full on the palate. There’s a subtlety to the fruit, which sets it up to mesh well with the dark, stony, savoury minerality. Flowing and gliding into a very long finish. There’s a remarkable level of poise and class here."

96 Punkte JG 2019 - The Wine Pilot:

"This is a very different expression of McLaren Vale shiraz (Syrah) here that has a distinctly Rhone Valley edge to it. Fans of the classic McLaren Vale Shiraz might be a little shocked with its savoury personality. But give this wine some time and I guarantee you will be rewarded.

Right now there is tar, earth and coal dust aromas sitting over sweet mulberry and blackberry fruits but it is the savoury side that initially dominates. It’s reserved and just waiting to come out of its shell, as it does over a couple of days. It fleshes out more in the mouth but is lifted by savoury elements again – rocky, black pepper and even some Mediterranean garrigue (a combination of dried herbs such as thyme, rosemary and lavender). That savoury side lifts it into something special and with those chalky tannins and long finish you can see this wine is going to be a cracker for at least a decade"- Angus Hughson
