Swinney - Farvie Collection 2023:

Swinney - Farvie Grenache 2023:

"The 2023 Farvie Grenache bears all the hallmarks of the tremendous 2023 vintage: It has levity and grace, detail and freshness, without weight. It is intense, with a core of pure fruit, and the wine has a lower pH and higher acid thanks to the seasonal conditions, with 30% whole bunches and fermentation in old oak, with maturation in large-format old oak. The vineyard is highly attractive; there are bush vines on the crest of a sloping, sun-drenched hill, and the wines convey that windswept freshness and structure. I love the fruit here—a core of raspberry, strawberry, blood plum and even cranberry—yet it is the tannins that I must look to for critical assessment; here, they are pliable, fresh, spicy, savory and veritably plume through the fruit. This is seamless structure and ductile length at its best. This is an exciting wine, all the more so given it is from the spectacular 2023 vintage. We have so little framework for premium Grenache outside of South Australia, and yet here, in Frankland River, the high-tide mark is set. I'll be saying this frequently throughout the 2023 releases from Western Australia: this is the best Grenache made yet under the Farvie label. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Wine Advocate

19.5/20 Matthew Jukes, The Fifty Finest Wines of 2024, www.matthewjukes.com, January 2025:
“2023 Swinney Farvie Grenache (30% whole bunch, 13.8 %alcohol, 100% Wilson’s Pool fruit) has a stunning nose, and it is brutally firm on the palate. It slams your taste buds shut only to open them again to see if they are still alive, and then it invades again without hesitation with extremely forceful and powerful purple fruit notes. It tastes darker than it looks. The colour is a vivid carmine, and this sanguineous colour leads one to anticipate a lighter style, but the acid profile and bitterness deliver a cut lip and bruised nose. The ironstone gravel soils make this an arresting and unforgiving wine. The sudden impact and collateral sensorial damage make it riveting. It shocks and then amazes and almost immediately soothes. It is the angriest and most demonic Grenache with the kindest heart. Half an hour later, the nose is singing, and the brittle edges calm a touch, making it evocative and grown-up, making the more open and icecreamy Grenaches seem uncomplicated and two-dimensional. The tension on the finish is what sets this wine and its siblings apart. It is unique from these varieties’ perspective. This is one of the most impressive Farvie Grenaches to date, and it continues a run of wines that defies comprehension.” 19.5/20

99 Punkte - Ray Jordan, Business News:

‘The palate is unlike any other Australian grenache, with its precise arrow-straight acidity fired with telling accuracy to a target that eventually reveals deeper succulent fruit flavours.’

98 Punkte - Nick Ryan, The Weekend Australian:

‘Pure and deeply layered. A fragrant fleshiness up front, a plushness to the mid-palate with exquisite gravelly tannins pushing through velvet sheaths to shape the wine and lengthen the finish.’

Swinney - Farvie Syrah 2023:

"The 2023 Farvie Syrah is streamlined and tightly coiled, with layers of compacted red gravel, dried rose petals, blood and licorice, dried herbs and caper brine, tapenade and sandalwood. This is all blue fruit; the tannins are firm but very fine, profuse without being overbearing and all derived from the fruit and stems (approximately 60% in 2023). At 13.9% alcohol, this is fine, fresh and bloody, and it's so exciting to feel, as the tannins are everything we could hope for, as fine wine lovers, seamlessly integrated and natural, contributing to the overall effortlessness of the wine. Bravo. Sealed under screw cap." - Wine Advocate

20+/20 Matthew Jukes, The Fifty Finest Wines of 2024, www.matthewjukes.com, January 2025:
"
Finally, the featured wine in this extraordinary trio. 2023 Swinney Farvie Syrah employs 55% whole bunches, 13.7% alcohol, and the fruit is derived 70% Powderbark B2 and 30% Wilson’s Pool. This is a super-closed and incredibly combative wine, and all the action happens in pin-drop silence. This is a quiet assassin, and the tension throughout is remarkable. It is not easy to determine the grape variety on first taste, and nor should it be because the vineyard and its intense minerality speak louder than the flesh and skins of the grapes. The frictive layers of anti-fruit silently fall away to reveal a spectacular statuesque Syrah. Toned, lithe, brightly fruited and yet immovable, there is not a molecule out of place, and it stands riveted to the spot with a commanding gaze and unshakable temperament." 20+/20

‘A remarkable wine that challenges our greatest shiraz albeit with a stylistic difference.’

‘Savoury, tight, earthy. With time, black and blue berries emerge, and the wine takes on a little flesh as well. But a firm, ironstone spine remains. Incredible focus and precision.’

Swinney - Farvie Mourvedre 2023:

"I am so glad that the Farvie range now—since the inaugural vintage in 2021—includes a Mourvèdre. The vineyard is a special place in Frankland River, the bush vines bearing against the seasons atop a rolling slope, set among a wider vineyard area. This tiny pocket accounts for just 2% of the Swinney vineyard holdings, tiny when you consider that. The 2023 Farvie Mourvèdre is less sweetly fruited than the Grenache tasted alongside, with a core of earthy, pure fruit, wrapped by a sheath of grippy, finely milled tannins. This is Mourvèdre every day of the week, yet it has grace and elegance rarely seen in the variety in Australia. It's a significant wine in many respects, not the least will be its long aging potential and its distinct personality. It's very good indeed and very different in each set of vintage conditions. Aside from the tannins, which I absolutely love in every way, the perfume is the most captivating bit about this wine—wet garden roses, petrichor, summer berries, red gravel and dry incense spice—and the perfume permeates the finish. I like it more and more the longer it sits in the glass. 13.9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Wine Advocate

19.5/20 Matthew Jukes, The Fifty Fines Wines of 2024, www.matthewjukes.com, January 2025:
“This time, the recipe involves 66% whole bunches, and the alcohol level is 13.8%. The fruit comes from the same source as the Grenache. Farvie Mourvèdre is more expansive, and it is immediately convivial. This variety’s softer impact and more open-armed expression lull you into a false sense of security before the trademark Farvie minerality attacks without warning or mercy. The moisture is sucked from the palate and is replaced with stoniness and skin characters that tease and striate. These palate manoeuvres cause rivulets of juiciness to collect, which refresh the senses with clean, free-running, open and gentle red and purple fruit flavours. It is stunning. There are discreet moments of fleshiness and controlled eroticism that work wonders from a pheromonal level. Fig notes and fresh-peeled bark abound, and it glistens with carnality. The fact that the well of profound fruit notes senesces to a single point of awesome and arresting dryness is entirely compelling. ” 19.5/20

‘Unapologetically firm through the finish. A brooding beauty, a masterclass in allowing mourvèdre to tread the tightrope between the sacred and the profane.’
