Bekkers - McLaren Vale Grenache Vertikale 18/19/21:

"2018 has been an excellent vintage to drink since its release, not just for this wine but for many from South Australia. Given the wet and cool conditions of the 2017 year, the ground and vines were prepared for the warmth and heat of the 2018 vintage. This meant that despite the heat, the canopies looked fantastically healthy (albeit smaller in size given the dryness of the year), and the wines seem to display that same energy. So here, the 2018 Grenache explodes with dark fruits, sumac, pomegranate molasses and tarragon, with notes of dried herbs and crushed rock as well. A beautiful wine, it is ultra elegant and long. I love it. It has the power of a warm vintage but the mineral cool detail of a cool one, too. The yin/yang is its superpower. It bears noting, although draw from it what you will, that this is the first time the Grenache has been labeled under 15% alcohol. The 2018 vintage is 14.5% alcohol and sealed under screw cap." -Wine Advocate

Bekkers is a producer for whom I have immense respect, led by husband-and-wife proprietors Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers. Toby handles the vineyards, Emmanuelle the winemaking, and the combination of their vast knowledge and experience is inherent in the wines tasted here for this report. With regard to viticulture, and especially Grenache although not limited to it, Toby is a trusted source of information when I seek to further understand a particular process or function of a vineyard or clone. The wines themselves predictably felt as thoughtful and as detailed as the people who made them, and the vertical here at the estate in McLaren Vale was as insightful as it was enjoyable. This producer comes warmly and roundly recommended.

97 points - James Halliday 2021:

"Picked on March 1, 10 and 23, each parcel wild yeast-open fermented separately with 10% whole bunches, the remainder destemmed, 5-6 days cold soak, matured in French puncheons. Bright, clear colour; medium-bodied, exceptional balance, spicy red/purple berries, fine tannins, and a very long finish. 14.5% alc, screwcap."

96+ points - Erin Larkin (RobertParker.com):

"If 2018 was warm, then 2019 was an extension of that and can be described as hot. It took the dryness/low rainfall to a whole new level, which was coupled with a significant hail event in November. This, combined with windy, stormy conditions resulted in compromised flowering. Lower yields due to reduced berry numbers per bunch was the result of those weather conditions. The 2019 Grenache, however, shows none of the challenges the vintage. It has density and a gently brooding nature thanks to the heat, but it is essentially as floral, perfumed and finely wrought as all the vintages alongside it are, showing the importance and power of great viticulture. This wine is drinking so well today, but it will, like the others, age very well in the cellar too, should that be your desire. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. - Wine Advocate

97 Punkte - James Halliday 2022:

"Blewitt, Seaview and Kangarilla sourcing across a meld of sand, ironstone, gravel, silt and clay. The wine that I look forward to the most here, no matter how brilliant the others are. A shimmering light ruby. A textural polyglot, incandescent, lit by its delicate shades of fruit as much as its textural precision and savouriness. Nebbiolo meets pinot on the nose. This is what grenache does at the highest calibre. Sandalwood, Darjeeling, bergamot, crushed rose, pomegranate, tamarind and kirsch. Long and gritty in the best sense. Febrile. Tensile. Would love to see it in bigger oak. A beautiful stain on the memory bank."

96+ points - Erin Larkin (RobertParker.com):

"Here, the start of a very diverse but magnificent trip of vintages begins. 2021 was not only an excellent season in terms of benevolent weather at all the right times, healthy flowering, yields, growing season conditions and harvest, but also a reprieve from the three years preceding it that were defined by warmth, dryness and low yields. 2022 was the slightly cooler, slightly wetter pigeon pair to 2021, and it produced wines of eminent silkiness and approachability, which was followed by 2023. It was cool and wet and perhaps challenging for some, but from a wine-quality perspective on this observational side of the fence, it was superb. So here, the 2021 Grenache is everything we expect from the season: balanced, placid, powerfully structured, supple and long through the finish. It is a baby, and while many bottles of this great vintage will have already been enjoyed, it is undoubtedly one of the pedigree vintages that will continue to improve over the coming decades. This is the lowest labeled alcohol reading of any Bekkers Grenache produced yet, at 14% alcohol. Sealed under screw cap." - Wine Advocate

"The red berry, cherry and a whisper of dark chocolate define the bouquet and palate of a totally delicious wine. All the flavours of the palate are those promised by the bouquet. It’s only 14% alc/vol and medium-bodied; the superb balance guarantees a wine that can be drunk tonight and all steps of the 30 years to follow." - James Halliday
